TN Seshagopalan, a popular Carnatic singer, was born on 5th September 1948. He is a musician as well as a composer. TN Seshagopalan, who is addressed as Madurai Thirumalai Nambi Seshagopalan, was born in Nagappattinam. TN Seshagopalan worked as a music professor at Madurai Kamaraj University. Seshagopalan’s first guru is his mother and then it was Ramanathapuram C. S. Sankarasivan who mentored him. Seshagopalan did his Bachelor's degree in science at Madras University. Later, he joined Madurai Kamaraj University to study music and got a degree. TN Seshagopalan is an expert in playing Harmonium and Veena. Besides this, he excels in Harikatha. Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar is his mentor in Harikatha. Seshagopalan composed music on his own and is popular for his Thillanas, Namavalis, Bhajans, Abhangs and the North Indian ragas. He had also taken part in many Jugalbhandhis.

In 1984, he took part at the Adelaide International Festival in Australia. He had also performed in Australia’s popular cities, including Perth, Adelaide and Sydney. On the same trip, he performed in New Zealand too. Besides Australia and NZ, he had performed in the US, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and Bahrain. In 1987, the Indian government appointed him as India's cultural ambassador to Russia.

Besides being a legendary musician, he had also shown his other side of talent. Yes, he is an actor too. In 1983, he debuted as a hero in the film Thodi Raagam, his own production venture. Seshagopalan had been honored by various Music academies. He is one of the legendary musicians from Tamilnadu to receive one of the highest civilian awards of India, Padma Bhushan. He was honored with this award in 2004 for his service to the music.

In 1964, he was awarded as Tiruppugazh Mani and in 1967, he received the title Gana Bhoopathi from the Tamil Sangam of Olavakod. Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam awarded him the title, Sangeetha Kala Sagaram. In 1984, the TN government honored him with Kalaimamani. In 1993, he received Sulakshana Gana Vichkshana from H. H. Srimad Andavan Swamigal, Srirangam. He was awarded as the Musician of the Year 1999-2000 by Sangeet Natak Akademi. Seshagopalan was awarded the title Sangeetha Kalasikhamani, by The Indian Fine arts Society, Chennai, in 2000. He also received the President Award 2000 and it was given by Sangeet Natak Academy, run by the Central Government.

In 2002, he received Kumaragandharva Rashtriya Sanmaan from Kumaragandharva Foundation, Mumbai. In the same year, he received Nadhabrahmam from Indian Fine Arts Texas, US. He was given the title Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 2006 by Madras Music Academy. In 2007, he received the title Sangeeta Saagara from CMANA, New Jersey, US. In the same year, he was awarded Gayaka Sikhamani by Chodiah Memorial Trust, Mysore. In 2014, he was awarded the Harikatha Chudamani award by the Krishna Gana Sabha. Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam was present, while Seshagopalan received the award from Krishna Gana Sabha.
