On June 3, 1977, he was born in Chennai, India, and studied at the University of Southern California and Columbia University in New York.
He began studying western classical piano at the age of three, and as a result, he is well-versed in both Carnatic and Western Classical music. He does not believe in combining the two genres, preferring to express both sides of his personality individually by performing solo on Western Classical and collaborating with other musicians as a Carnatic pianist. Anil Srinivasan and Sikkil Gurucharan are now well-known for pioneering a new Carnatic music genre. The pair has amassed a substantial audience in a short period by using the classical piano as a frame around the free-flowing classical South Indian voice. The format was originated with Charsur's critically praised "Madhirakshi" (2006).
Anil Srinivasan has joined with Brhaddhvani, a 25-year-old music research Centre situated in Chennai, to co-found MusicUniv, a music education initiative called "Music Venture." The objective of the organization is to encourage music education in both private and public schools. MusicUniv is on a mission to raise awareness about how Indian schools have disregarded this crucial sense in children that needs to be developed and encourage schools to incorporate music education into their curriculum. Anil hopes to leverage satellite technology to establish virtual classrooms that will reach schools all around the state.
