Lalitha is an Indian actress and dancer, who is known to have inculcated the art of classical dancing to the films that she has done. Lalitha is the eldest among Lalitha, Padmini, and Ragini, or ostentatiously known as the Travancore Sisters. Lalitha has acted in numerous regional films inclusive of Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. Hindi cinema has credited Lalitha with ushering in the era of classical dancing in them. Lalitha was born in Thiruvananthapuram, to parents Gopala Pilla and Saraswathiyamma. The Malayalam actress, Shobana, is her niece. Lalitha is also the cousin of the veteran actress, Sukumari. Lalitha set foot in the film industry before her sisters and acted mainly in Malayalam cinemas. The inception of Lalitha’s career began in 1938 with the Tamil movie “Adithan Kanavu.”

Lalitha took up femme fatal roles in most of her films. The decade of the 40s saw Lalitha in various movies such as Uday Shankar’s “ Kalpana,” Ramakrishna Rao’s “ Laila Majnu,” “Vellinakshatram,” the MGR starrer “ Kannika,” “ Mohini,” “Gokuladaasi,” M. V. Meiyappan’s “Vedhala Ulagam,” “Deva Manohari,” and “Baktha Jana,” among many others. Some of Lalitha’s films from the 50s include “ Prasanna,” “ Chandrika,” Sriramulu Naidu’s “Kaanchana,” “Sudarshan,” K. Ramnoth’s “Ezhai Padum Padu,” “ Parijatham,” and the Sivaji Ganesan starrer “ Kaveri.” She has also acted in “ Jeevitham,” the MGR starrer “ Rajarajan,” D. Yoganand’s “ Madurai Veeran,” “Marumagal,” “Ponni,” P. Neelakantan’s “Oru Iravu,” and “Devagi among many others. Lalitha is also the grandmother of the Malayalam actor, Krishna.
