S. S. Rajendran was born in 1928 in Usilampatti, Madras Presidency, British India. He was born with the name Sedapatti Suryanarayana Rajendran but was known in the film industry by his initials SSR. He earned the sobriquet of Latchiya Nadigar, which means an Idealistic Actor. This title was conferred upon him after his successful movie RajaRani. His father, Suryanarayana Devar, worked as an official in the education department. His mother's name is Adhilakshmi. SSR's sister Pappammal is married to the actor D. V. Narayanaswamy. SSR married Pankajammal and became the parents of Elangovan, Rajendrakumar, Kalaivanan, Selvaraj, and Bhagyalakshmi. A cinema theatre, film studio, and recording theatre was built in Chennai by his children. These establishments are a tribute to SSR’s wife, Pankajam. He married to C. R. Vijayakumari, after twelve years of courtship, and had a son Ravikumar. He married Thamaraiselvi after that and had a son and daughter named Kannan and Lakshmi. He is an actor, a producer, a director, and a politician, who was associated with the Tamil Industry for a very long time (1951-2014). Rajendran made his acting debut in 1952 with the film Parasakhti, directed by the famous duo Krishnan-Panju, the best at that time. Other of his notable works were Mudhalai, President Panchatcharam, Pillai Kani Amudhu, Thalai Koduthan Thambi, Thedi Vandha Selvam, Edhayum Thangum Idhayam, Poompuhar, Avan Pithana, Kumudham, Sorgavasal, Ammaiyappan, Ratha Kanneer, Kula Dheivam, Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum, Kalyanikku Kalyanam, Sivagangai Seemai, Poomalai, and Ethiroli. He has worked mostly with all the famous actors of his time, including M. G. He was the one who brought Manorama into the field of acting.
Besides acting, he has written songs, scripted movies, and directed three films Thangarathinam, Alli, and Manimagudam. He was honored by Vijayakanth and Sarathkumar, who had offered him notable roles in their movies Vallarasu and Rishi. He has received seven President Awards, both from Central and State. He was the Founder and Member of the South Indian Artists Association and was elected as its President for three times. SSR was honored with Thyagaraja Bhagavathar Award by Tamil Nadu State Government, 1999, and he has also received the Kalaimamani award.
He joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Party and was the first actor in India to become an elected member of a Legislative assembly, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly as a DMK party candidate from Theni in 1962 Madras State Legislative Assembly election. He was elected as an esteemed member of the Rajya Sabha after joining the party All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and won from the Andipatti constituency in the 1980 assembly elections. Rajendran died in the Chennai Meenakshi Hospital on 20th October 2014 due to lung infection.
