Sharada Ramanathan is a renowned journalist, a documentary filmmaker, and even a feature film director. Media labels her as a cultural thinker and writer. She has a literary identity, in which she would embrace her cultural heritage and reach out to the international culture at large. So far she has made three films (one documentary), but all these three films speak of social issues. Sharada is a filmmaker and World Culture Forum, India's board member.

Before making her way towards films, she was involved in the cultural and social movements such as CRY and SPIC MACAY. The organization SPIC MACAY encouraged youth participation in mainly classical music, dance, folk music, yoga, and meditation and other aspects of Indian culture. Also, she set up India Foundation for the Arts which has its headquarters in Bangalore, and that supports education, research, and practices related to Fine Arts.

It is a non-profit organization and was set up in 1993. Plus, she was also a program officer for Ford Foundation. In the year 2007, she directed and did the screenplay for a movie (Sringaram) based on a story written by Indra Soundar Rajan who is also the author of many novels, and works for television serials and writes even screenplays. The movie ‘Sringaram’ was produced by Padmini Ravi. The film stars Y. Gee. Mahendra, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Manoj K. Jayan.

The movie showed that the desire for the art of dancing never ends, and it can be passed to one family generation although, there can be so much of roadblocks to the career of a dancer. In 2014, she directed a documentary 'Natyanubhava,' for which Madhu Ambat again won the cinematography award. This documentary was based on Indian classical dance. The documentary was of 52-minute duration, and it was an initiative from the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to document Indian classical dances. Natyanubhava is an initiative by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT).
