Ramesh Selvan is a popular Indian movie director, who mainly works in the Tamil films industry. He started his career as a filmmaker with the action movie Ulavuthurai (1998) featuring Vijayakanth in the main role. After hat, Ramesh directed the revenge drama movie Jananam (2003) featuring Arun Vijay.
Ramesh then started directing a movie titled Runway with Prashanth, but after a few days, it had run into financial problems. Ramesh said that he would be making a return in early 2010, announcing that he was working on a project named Kalavaram with Sathyaraj in the main role.
Kalavaram was announced to be based on a true story of the biggest riot of Tamil Nadu, with Sathyaraj portraying a deputy police commissioner who leads an investigation commission. The release of the movie was shifted back several times, leaving the movie which started in 2010, in a cold bag.
There were several plans to release the movie in August 2013, but they were also unsuccessful because of a lot of other movies seeking screens for release. Ramesh told that the producer Chandraprakash asked him to postpone the release of Kalavaram to get more screen space for his film. In exchange, Chandraprakash reportedly committed to Ramesh that he would purchase the distribution rights of his movie under his Sri Mishri Productions banner.
Selvan later allegedly told that the producer Chandraprakash backed out of his commitments. The movie eventually hit the theatres on January 2014 and opened to below average reviews. In mid-2012, Ramesh signed up to direct a movie named Thalaivan starring newcomer Bas and shot it after finishing work on Kalavaram. During June 2013, Ramesh issued a press release stating that he has separated himself from the project since he had suffered health problems.
