Antony Mitradas was a great Indian film director, born on November 3, 1913, in Madurai, into a family of doctors. American College, Madurai, awarded him a Bachelor of Arts in statistics. His love for film direction took him to Calcutta, where he applied to an institute run by Mr. Balchandani. At the institute, his talent was recognized by the noted director, Ellis R. Dungan, when he came to give a guest lecture. He recommended Mitradas to T.S. Sundaram of Modern Theaters, Salem. As soon he completed his studies at the film Institute, he started off his movie direction career. He went out of the ordinary and made comedy movies in the era of social drama. He explored the work of direction in three languages: Tamil, Malayalam, and Sinhalese. He debuted in the world of film direction with the film Dayalan, starring P. U. Chinnappa and T.R. Mahalingam.
In 1942, when World War 2 started, Mitradas prioritized the service of the country and dedicated himself to the service of the country. He joined the army and got his military postings in Jabalpur, Dhaka, Chittagong, and Singapore. He served the army and the nation till the end of the war in 1945. After the war, he resumed his film directing career, producing a few notable films for Indian cinema. In the Sinhalese language, Duppathage Duka (1956) starred Laddy Ranasinghe and Gerly Gunawardana. This film was the remake of the Tamil hit movie Ezhai Padum Padu. In Tamil language film Pizhaikkum Vazhi (1948), starring T. S. Durairaj, T. A. Jayalakshmi, and T. S. Balaiah and Sivagami (1960), was also one of his Tamil language films. On February 20, 2017, in Chennai, at the age of 103, he left this material world, leaving an everlasting impression on Indian cinema in the field of film direction.
