A V Meiyappan

A.V.Meiyappan is a Tamil director, producer, and philanthropist who is known for his AVM Productions. His original name is Avichi Meiyappa Chettiar. He was born on the 28th of July, 1907, in Karaikudi. He instituted AVM Productions in Vadapalani, Chennai. He is respected one of the pioneers in the Tamil movie Industry. He also received the praise of people as one of the moguls of South Indian Cinema

. A.V.Meiyappan made his debut in the entertainment field as a producer in the Tamil film ‘Alli Arjuna.’ He also produced the popular ‘Nam Iruvar’ movie. His spouses are Alamelu Meiyappan and Rajeswari Meiyappan. During his initial days, he focused on Mythological dramas like Ramayana and later ventured into Tamil movies. In a very short span, the production house gained more popularity and reached out to the movies of almost all South Indian languages.

He not only contributed to the growth of the movie industry but also voluntarily contributed to many social causes. He donated on a large scale to institutions. Also, he established educational institutions in and around Chennai. He inaugurated the Avichi High School in Virugambakkam, established by AVM Productions in honor of A.V.Meiyappan. His productions received the most number of awards- National Film Awards, State Film Awards, Nandi Awards, Vijay Awards, and Filmfare awards.

Some of the notable films produced under the banner are Raja Chinna Roja, Leader, Gemini, Idhuvum Kadanthu Pogum, Muthal idam, Vettaikaran, Ayan, Sivaji, Thirupathi, Perazhagan, Priyamana Thozhi, Anbe Anbe, Sethupathy IPS, Thyagu, Vasanthi, Paati sollai thattadhey, and Samsaram Adhu Minsaram. These films are evergreen hits and blockbusters of their period. A. V. Meiyappan not only focused on the Movie industry, but also in Television shows.

It will continue to carry its legacy even after the great man’s death. The legend died on August 12, 1979.
