Murali Kartik was a former Indian cricketer known for his orthodox left-arm bowling. He was born on the 11th of September, 1976, in Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Before making a shift towards cricket Murali wanted to become a genetic engineer. Kartik joined the junior system and then the Under-16 team of Delhi in 1992 and showcased an excellent performance. However, he soon had to leave the team because of his growing age but sadly he did not become the part of Under-19 team. But he managed to secure a place for himself in the Under-19 team of the Railways. In 1990-2000, Kartik became part of the Indian Cricket Team but could not maintain a permanent seat. In 2002, Kartik made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe. In the following season, Kartik could play international matches by becoming the substitute for Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh and playing on their behalf in case they were injured or when the team was allowed to choose three spinners. He made his mark in 2004-05, in the home test series against Australia, when he bagged seven wickets in a match along with the man of the match title leading India to its victory. He then began playing in English domestic cricket as an overseas player. He first started in 2004, in Lancashire League with Ramsbottom and played with them for a year. Then in 2007, he joined the team of Middlesex, Kartik was part of this team when they won the Twenty20 Cup in England, in 2008. In the 2007s, Kartik was called again by the Indian team to join the ODI.
Later Kartik became part of the 2008 Indian Premier League inaugural as a player of Kolkata Knight Riders. For the coming IPL seasons, he then became a player of Pune Warriors in 2011, Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013 and finally Kings XI Punjab in 2014. He then continued with his overseas career by leaving Middlesex and joining Somerset in 2010 and for the 2011 season by joining Surrey. Apart from this, Kartik has also played many Ranji Trophy matches for the Railway. He is now a cricket commentator covering the Indian Premium League and India’s home matches. He married Shweta Kartik in 2003.
