Jijoy Pulikal Rajagopalan is a Malayalam cinema and theater actor. Hailing from northern Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district, he was born into an Arts-oriented family. Both his parents were singers, although not at a professional level. From a young age, Jijoy showed a talent for acting. “I am a performer; I have been all my life,” he said in an interview with the French arts website 'Little Hearts Movement'.
He is an enthusiast of the Keralite martial arts, Kalaripayatuh. He enjoys listening to Carnatic music.
He graduated from the School of Drama at Calicut University. Jijoy also has a Masters from the School of Performing Arts at Pondicherry. “The theater raised me, gave me friends, put food on my plate,” says Jijoy.
Jijoy had a minor role in the Kunchako Boban starring 1999 hit Nirom (Colour). Typically, Jijoy opts for unusual roles in unusual films. Short films and art films with a message are his preference. Jijoy worked as a backstage coordinator of the popular Amrita TV reality show “Best Actor”. Swayamvara Pandhal was his next film, releasing in 2000.
He had a minor role in the 2002 action flick Shivam. Based on a real story, the plot follows the crusade of an upstanding police officer (
Biju Menon
) against a corrupt politician.
In 2003 he acted with
Meera Jasmine
in Gramophone. The story is set in Kochi’s fabled “Jew Town” and is about the efforts of a woman to return to the land of her ancestors, Israel. Rajesh Narayanan’s Kalavarkey was his other release that year.
The next year, he acted with Rajan P Dev in Shambhu.
In 2005, he was chosen to act in a unique project : A Midsummer Night's Dream, a multilingual theater rendition of the famous Shakespearean play of the same name. Although the period following his selection was challenging for him, Jijoy was elated at the positive domestic reception.
Directed by Tim Supple, the play made its international debut in 2006. Produced with assistance from the British Council, the play was staged in Swan Theater at Stratford-upon-Avon (the birth place of Shakespeare) and at Verona, Italy. Jijoy played two roles : as Oberon, the “King of the Fairies” and as Theseus.
R.Hurwitt of San Francisco Gate described Jijoy’s performance as "magnificently commanding". Birmingham Times accoladed his rendition of Oberon as “one of the sexiest yet.” The cast of the play, including Jijoy, received voice training from noted voice artist Sicily Berry.
He acted with Mammooty in Best Actor, which was released in 2010. Chaapa Kurish was released in 2011. Jijoy was noted for his critical role in the acclaimed thriller Memories. Co-starring with Prithviraj, the film is about a disgraced police officer’s attempt at redemption by tackling a serial killer on the loose. In the same year, he acted in Dooram, a short film by Roshini Swapna.
He acted in Manoj Kana’s 2014 film Chayilam (Hues of Red). His costars included Anumol K. and M.R. Gopakumar. His other projects include Sidhartha Siva’s Zahir, Ithihasa and
