K P Mohanan is the former State Minister for Agriculture, and Kerala’s former Minister, Late Shri P.R. Kurup, is his father. On 3rd March 1950, he was born in Kannur, Kerala, and completed his pre-degree and diploma in Aeraunotical Engineering from Nehru College, Coimbatore. He began his political career by working as a member of the International Socialist Organisation (ISO), the students’ organization on college campuses, and participated in student movements and agitations.
Later, he became a member of the National Working Committee of Janatha Dal. Then, he became the President of Peringalam Mandalam, a volleyball team member, and served as a Minister for Irrigation and Co-operation from 1967 to 1969. From 1996 to 1999, he served in Forest and Transport Ministry in E.K. Nayanar Ministry, and being the agricultural Minister, part of Mohanan’s duty was to handle agriculture, soil conservation, soil survey, warehousing co-operation, animal husbandry, Agricultural University, Veterinary University, printing, and stationery.
Before entering his political career, he worked as editor-in-chief for ‘Padayani Daily.’ He worked in Qatar for a short term in Photography and film processing in the lab named Vegas and Salam studios and stores. He was also trained in Indian martial art, Kalaripayttu, from the age of five and entered politics out of his interest to serve the country; he created his own political identity through immense hard work.
