Born in April 1945, Kumara Varma is an Indian theatre director. He was born in the Mavelikkara region in Kerala. He completed his bachelor’s in science and joined the National School of Drama in 1964. He received two prestigious awards: Bharat Puraskar and Girish Ghosh Puraskar while he was at the National School of Drama. He was actively involved in the Natakakalari movement which is the New-theatre movement in Kerala. He wrote and directed many plays. In 9173, he joined the faculty of the department of Indian Theatre at Punjab University. Kumara Varma was awarded the Italian Government Scholarship to study the History of Theatre and Drama. He studied at the University of Rome under the scholarship scheme. Kumara Varma represented India at the UNESCO World Theatre Conference in Paris in 1980.
