Born on 14 November 1924 in Mavellikara, Allapuzha district, Kerala, K.E. Mathai, was a short story writer, play writer and novelist. He was more notably known by his pen name, Parappurath. Many of his novels have also been made into movies. Parappurath, after his education at high school, decided to join the Indian Army in 1944 and served there till 1965.
His eventful life at the Army has served as the foundation for many of his short stories and novels. Furthermore, a vast majority of the characters in his works have been influenced by real-life characters from the time he spent in the army. The inspirations for many of his short stories were real incidents from his life.
Parappurath has written 13 collections of short stories, 20 novels and a play. He has also been the President of the World’s largest writers’ and publishing co-operative, Sahitya Pravarthaka Co-operative Society. His most notable work is Ara Nazhika Neram, a Malayalam novel, published in 1964. Parappurath was awarded Sahitya Pravartaka Award and Kerala Sahitya Academy Award for the same. The book was also made into a film, directed by Sethumadhavan, which was highly successful.
The story in the novel is about a 90 year, orthodox patriarch head of the family. Another one of his work turned into a movie was Makane Ninakku Vend whose film adaption was released in 1971. Parappurath was also awarded M.P. Paul Prize for his works while works, when made into a film was highly acclaimed.
His book, Pani Theeratha Veedu, made into film won both best film at Kerala State Film Awards and National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam.
This clearly shows the mastery of Parappurath in his works. He died on December 30, 1981, at the age of 57. Parappurath’s works as a novelist and short story writer are recognized till date. He is counted among one of the most prolific Malayalam writers of his times. His works are recognized even today and are read and enjoyed by the people
