R Velappan Nair was a key figure in the Malayalam film industry. He was a director, producer ,and cinematographer. He was born on 29th July 1907 to an affluent family in Alappuzha. He started his career by joining a theatre company from Tamil Nadu. When the company reached Madras, Velappan Nair started working for the Syamala Film studio. This is where he learned the art of cinematography.
After working in the Tamil industry for some time, he turned his focus to Mollywood. He made his directorial debut in Malayalam with the drama ‘Sthree.’ After his success, he went on to direct four more movies. He then started to work on his dream project - ‘Aryankavu Kollasangam.’ It was during the making of this movie that his career was destroyed.
