Jose Thomas, etc. Johny Antony has been active in Indian cinema since 1991. Johny is married to Shyni Antony since 2002 and has two beautiful daughters- Aswathi and Lakshmi with her. He completed his initial school education from St. John’s Baptist High School in Nedumkunnam and his higher education from NSS College in Changanassery. Johny started his career by assisting acclaimed Malayalam director Thulasidas in 1991 in the movie Chanchattam starring Jayaram, Urvashi, Jagathy and Manoj K Jayan.
He worked as the assistant director with Thulasidas in his next two movies- Ezhara Ponnana starring Jayaram, Thilakan and Siddique, and Poochakkaru Mani Kettum starring Mukesh, Siddique, and Kalpana. Johny was assisting director Nissar on Sudhinam where he first met Dileep. He was the assistant director to filmmaker Jose Thomas in movies like
Udayapuram Sulthan starring Dileep,
Captain Raju and Jagathy, and Sundarapurushan starring
Suresh Gopi, Devayani, and Nandhini. After Sudhinam, Johny again worked as the associate director in two more films starring Dileep. They shared a great bond which made Dileep produce Johny’s directorial debut C. I. D Moosa with Dileep playing the title role. It was a comedy film that went on to become a super hit. Johny’s second movie Kochi Rajavu was also produced by Dileep and had Dileep playing the lead role opposite
This romantic comedy was well received by the masses and became a great hit. He next directed megastar Mammootty in the movie Thuruppu Gulan. This film was another comedy flick which put Johny’s name among the list of promising directors in the Malayalam film industry. His next Inspector Garud was again a hit starring Dileep. After delivering back-to-back hits and having worked with the big stars quite early in his career, Johny’s next film was Cycle with actor Vineet Sreenivasan. His next Ee Pattanathil Bhootham was a comedy laced with horror starring Mammootty, Kavya Madhavan, Jagathy and Innocent and did not manage to set the box office on fire. In 2012, Johny directed two movies- Masters starring Prithviraj, Sasikumar, Pia Bajpai and Ananya, and Thappana starring Mammootty, Murali Gopi, and Charmy Kaur.
‘Masters’ was a huge hit and was quite different from his other movies as this was a suspense thriller. His next film Bhaiyya Bhaiyya in 2014 was another slapstick comedy starring Kunjako Boban,
Salim Kumar and Innocent. It did not make its mark among movie-goers and did not do well commercially. Johny’s latest release was the super hit Mammootty starred
Thoppil Joppan which was a romantic comedy. It also starred
Renji Panicker, Salim Kumar,
Harisree Ashokan, etc. In this movie, Mammootty reprises the role of a Kottayam ‘achayan’ (a colloquial expression for the Syrian Christians in Kerala especially from Kottayam) after a long time.
The character may have traces of Johny’s experiences having been born and brought up in Kottayam. The movie-goers loved the film, and it once again proved Johny’s flair for creating simple and lovable comedies with straight-forward humor. His experience of having worked as an assistant director for over ten movies of various genres and his talent for creating comedy movies has made Johny Antony a well-known name in the Malayalam film industry. Audiences are waiting for him to announce his next directorial venture and it will be amazing to watch what next he has in store for his audiences.
