Dr. Rajkumar the superstar of Kannada film industry was born on 24 April, 1929 at Gajanur .Originally, he was named Mutturaju. Rajkumar began his career as a theater artist. Rajkumar started his film career at the age of eight and went on to act as a lead in the film Bedara Kannappa [1954]. Bedara Kannappa was directed by H L N Simha, who gave the name ”Rajkumar." From then on wards his name from Mutturaju became Rajkumar for the rest of his life.

He acted with many famous and notable directors of the south Indian cinema. In his career he did all kind of roles and gave life to characters of all types. Dr. Rajkumar was also one of the most multitalented actors in Indian cinema. He later ventured into film production with the hugely popular and historical drama biographical film Ranadheera Kanteerava, which he also produced it. It is one of the most popular films of Rajkumar. He started a film production company called Vajreshwari Production, which produced movies under the banner of Dakshayani Combines. Mr. Rajkumar played lead roles in mythological films, historical, romantic, comedy, family dramas and action films in a career spanning five decades and with remarkable success.

He is followed as a cultural icon of Kannada all over Karnataka. He is also famously known as Natasarvabhouma, Gaana Gandharva by his fan followers. He was an icon in the mind of Kannada people and was seen as a role model to millions of people all over Karnataka. Rajkumar contributed immensely to the Kannada Film Industry, with his acting and singing. Rajkumar is the only actor who has received national awards for both acting and singing in India. He is a recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1995. Rajkumar in his career received eleven Karnataka State Film Awards, ten South Film fare Awards, National Film Award for best playback singer  and two National Film Award. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the Mysore University.

On July 30, 2000 Rajkumar was kidnapped from the actor’s farm house at Gajanur in Tamil Nadu by the notorious Sandalwood smuggler Veerappan. His age was 71 at this time. This prompted a massive manhunt and search in the history of Karnataka. Rajkumar was released unharmed on November 15, 2000, after 108 days of captivity. He focused his energy and devoting time towards art and cinema throughout his career. Dr. Rajkumar passed away on April 12, 2006 following a cardiac arrest. The state government declared a state wide holiday on April 13 as a mark of respect to the superstar.
