Roopa Rao is an independent filmmaker located in Bangalore. She was born on May 18, 1981. Rao finished a Masters in Commerce with a focus in Personnel Management and dropped out of a Masters in Finance program. She was employed at Infosys for six years. She eventually quit her job to pursue filmmaking since she had a strong desire to do so. She graduated from the Asian Academy of Film and Television in Delhi with a degree in film direction and production. She then relocated to London, United Kingdom, to work as a documentary filmmaker's assistant. She afterward moved to India, where she practiced her profession by making documentaries and short films.
In 2016, she released India's first same-sex love story web series, The Other Love Story, by defying stereotypes. She received three prizes and seven nominations for her work from major national and international film festivals. "The Night of All Nights," "BFF (Breath Friend Forever)," "Silent Passage (Pandemic Tales)," "Vishnuvardhana” are some of her works. She has won numerous honors, including the Best Screenplay Award at the New York Indian Film Festival, the Best Screenplay Award at the Boston LGBTQ Film Festival, and the Best International Web Series Award at the Boston LGBTQ Film Festival, among others.
