As he always stayed a bachelor, people used to say that he was married to the art of dancing. His sister, Triveni Kanagal, also a dancer, co-founded a dance academy with him in Bengaluru. They together started it in 1991 with 30 students. He only taught and danced to Kannada songs due to his immense respect for his Language and culture. He wanted to pass and preserve the art of Bharatnatyam to the upcoming generation. They together ran the Kanagal Nrithyalaya for years. Many established actors and dancers learned their skills from them. Both of them learned their skills from Malathi Srinivaran of Kalakshetra in Chennai. When they moved to Bangalore, they were trained by Guru Radha Sridhar in Venkatesha Natya Mandira. He died at the age of 53 due to Covid in Victoria Hospital of Bengaluru.
