Kalpana was born on 18th July 1943 to Krishnamurthy and Janakamma in South Canara, Madaras Presidency (present-day Karnataka). She had a brother named Diwakar; her initial name was Sharat Lata, and she was inspired to act by her aunt Seethamma, an actress. Kalpana Ji was trained in Indian Classical Dance and won a state-level competition. She was an Indian actress and used to do Kannada Movies. She was dearly known as “Minugu Taare (A Shining Star)” in the industry. She is also widely known as one of the greatest actresses of the Kannada Cinema who enjoyed both the love of her fans and the critical appreciation by the public. She debuted in 1963 as a leading actress in “Saaku Magalu,” directed by B. R. Panthulu.

During her career from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, she appeared in many movies along with actor Rajkumar. Kalpana has also worked in Telugu, Tamil, Tulu, and Malayalam movies. The role of Kaveri gave her the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actress of that year, and she received the prize thrice during her career. She also received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in Kannada. Kalpana Ji was drawn towards acting after she got inspired by B. Saroja Devi’s performance in Kittur Chennamma in 1961. In the early 1960s, she studied the basics of film and stage performances, after which she moved to Davangere and met Mr. B. R. Panthulu.

She has worked with almost every prominent director and actor of her time. Kalpana was one of the most recommended actresses for director Kanagal. Their duo produced outstanding movies in the history of Kannada Cinema, and many of their films had a robust motivational message and are preserved in cinema history. Kanagal helped Kalpana enhance as an actress. By 1977, she started working in drama companies in Uttara Karnataka. She generally worked in Gudigeri Basavaraj’s drama company and spent 15 years in the Sandalwood film industry. Kalpana had worked in about eighty movies, most in Kannada.
