Chandan worked at the Institute for Social and Economic Change in Bengaluru as the Ramakrishna Hegde Chair Professor. He is an editor, author cum translator. Chandan created and directed a documentary of U. R. Ananthamurthy’s lectures on the 20th century Kannada writers. In 2014, the documentary video was aired as eight episodes of 60 minutes each on DD Chandana. He translated a lot of Kannada books and articles into English. Chandan translated Daredevil Mustafa by Purnachandra Tejasvi and The Greatest Kannada Short Stories Ever Told. He edited both those books and also co-edited The Rammanohar Lohia Reader.
Chandan worked with U. R. Ananthamurthy and also researched his works, a lot. Chandan worked as the Graduate Student Instructor at the University of Pittsburgh in the fall and winter of 1996-1998. Chandan worked as a Course Instructor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor during 1999, 2000, and 2005. He was a Graduate Student Instructor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in fall and winter in 2000, 2001, and 2005-2007. He was a Core Course Instructor at the National Law School of India in Bengaluru from 2008 to 2011. He had been a Core Course Instructor at Azim Premji University from 2011 to 2021.
In 2017, Chandan’s translation of U. R. Ananthamurthy’s Bara in 2016 was chosen for the Crossword Book Award for Translations. In 2016, he edited Theatres of Democracy: Selected Essays of Shiv Visvanathan. In 2018, Chadan edited The Way I See It: A Gauri Lankesh Reader. This was later translated into Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil. In 2019, he released A Life in the World, a compilation of the autobiographical interviews he worked with UR Ananthamurthy. In 2023, Chandan authored Another India: Events Memories People. This book is a social anthropology which explores the rich history and traditions of India besides explaining its cultural evolution.
