Irshad Kamil is an Indian lyricist and poet who came to prominence with his work in Bollywood movies. He was born in Punjab as a Punjabi Muslim on 5 September 1971. After completing his Diploma in Journalism from Punjab University, he also completed a Ph.D. in contemporary Hindi poetry and a Post Graduation in Hindi language; he chose journalism as his career and joined a newspaper ‘Tribune’ in Chandigarh and covered entertainment and educational news. During this period, he also interviewed actors like Pooja Bhatt and Manoj Bajpayee. He then worked even in a Hindi newspaper and was involved in desk jobs. However, right from childhood, he had a unique sense to understand his life’s decisions and knew well how he has to choose his career. Soon, he left his journalism job and then did his Ph.D. and was given the offer to teach. But his refusal to become a teacher proved a turning point in his life. He met producer and director Lekh Tandon, who came to Chandigarh to shoot for TV and was looking for a writer. On Tandon’s advice, he came to Mumbai and started writing for TV. Dissatisfied with his career in TV again, he left behind his journey as a writer and was a lookout for a job as a lyricist in the film industry.

Since his childhood, Irshad had a dream to become a lyricist. He met music director of film ‘ Socha Na Tha’ and through him met Imtiaz Ali. Though Irshad’s first assignment was for ‘Socha Na Tha’ his first film to be released was Sudhir Mishra's ‘ Chameli’. Then he worked for films like ‘ Jab We Met’, ‘ A Wednesday’, ‘ Love Aaj Kal’. ‘De Dana Dan,' ’ Khatta Meetha,'’ Anjaana Anjaani’, etc. Irshad had to struggle a lot till 2007 and but after he had received his first Filmfare award for his lyrics ‘Ajj Din Chadheya’ for the movie ‘ Love Aaj Kal’, he had never looked back.

A. R. Rahman, Irshad Kamil, and Imtiaz Ali have given exceptionally good music in their past films like ‘ Rockstar’ and ‘ Highway’. Their recent release is ‘ Tamasha’ starring Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor. Lyricist Irshad always felt that the film ‘Tamasha’ had given him the maximum freedom to write lyrics. The composer Rahman has given his own voice for the song ‘Tu Koi Aur Hai’ and there is also a song ‘Chali Kahani’ by Sukhwinder.

Subash Ghai while making the film ‘Kanchi’ showered praise on Irshad. Ghai had announced that he had recorded four songs by Ismail Darbar and Salim-Sulaiman on the lyrics of Irshad Kamil, and it will turn out to be a blockbuster music album. The film was not a hit, but the lyrics and the songs were in lips of everyone. Irshad Kamil also has written lyrics for blockbuster films like ‘ Raanjhanaa’ (Tohe Piya Milenge), ‘ Gunday’(Aaj Dil Shayrana), ‘Jab We Met’ (Surmayi Shaam Aati Hai ) etc. His songs are a beautiful blend or romance and spirituality.
