Having been awarded or nominated for almost every category in her trade, Jane Alexander is one of the most versatile and elegant American actresses of our time. She is a Tony Award winner, twice Emmy Award winner, 4 Academy Award nominee, seven-time Tony Award nominee, winner of Actors Guild awards, just to point out a few of the numerous career titles she has covered till date.
Born on 28th October of the year 1939, originally named Jane Quigley, she was raised by her parents Thomas and Ruth Quigley. After completing her education at Beaver Country Day School, she recognized her true passion which was acting. Jane graduated from the Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, the USA specializing in Mathematics and Computer Science and also attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland during her junior year. Her parents insisted her on completing her education with diverse courses just so that she had something to fall back on, just in case her acting career didn’t take off as she expected. Little did they know, their little girl would be nominated for various accolades in the glamor business. She also has often said that her parents had always supported her career choices even though they were highly pragmatic.
Even though her stage debut had already occurred during her school days, where she took part in various acts and stage plays, her theater debut came in small roles in acts like “Inspector General” and “Look Back in Anger.” But it was in 1968 where she found her breakthrough and acclamations from various critics in the play “The Great White Hope.” Jane portrayed the character of the mistress of a Boxer Jack Jefferson, for which she received accreditation in the form of a Tony Award. Consequently, she also starred in various stage plays which include 6 Rms Riv Vu, Find Your Way Home and Hamlet. Jane would also feature in movies ranging from “All President’s Men” in 1976, to her heartbreaking performance in “Testament”, and also in films like “Kramer vs. Kramer”, “The Cider House Rules.” Mr. Morgan’s Last Love” in 2013 saw her in a brief role. She pocketed her first Emmy Award nomination for her character ‘Eleanor’, in the television production titled “Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years.” Her portrayal of Sara Delano Roosevelt (Franklin Roosevelt’s mother) in the HBO production television series “Warm Springs” gained her with another Emmy nomination.
She met her husband, Robert Alexander in the 1960s where both of them were at a point of inception of their respective careers. They have a son Jace Alexander together. It was during the year 1993, President of USA; Bill Clinton honored her with the post of Chairman for The National Endowment for the Arts in Washington where she spent four years. She also holds honorary doctorates from various Universities and colleges. Also, she has been actively involved with various charities and NGO boards including Wildlife Conservation Society National, Stroke Association, Project Greenhope just to name a few.
