Doona is a photographer and an actress in South Korea. She is known for her characters as protagonist's political cum activist girlfriend named Cha Young-mi in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance in the year 2002. She had many roles speaking in English in many works including Cloud Atlas in the year 2012, Jupiter Ascending and Sense 8 in the year 2015. Doona natively belongs to South Korea. She followed Kim Hwa-young, her mother who was an actress on stage famous in Korea. She didn't want to enter into acting as she feared people saying that she is an actress only because her mother was an actor in theaters. But she mentioned that such experiences had a reverse effect. She witnessed various renowned actors co-starring with her mother. She felt that only people possessing extraordinary skills and talent would be able to do so. She was a student at Hanyang University in 1998; she was examined by a model agency when she was walking in the city of Seoul. In the year 1999, she switched to acting and debuting in TV school of drama. Later, she acted in The Ring Virus as a ghost, a remake of the horror movie in the Korean language.
She acted in Barking Dogs Never Bite film without makeup in 2000 when other actresses were not willing. She said that the scene in which she was chased by a homeless man in the film all through the building was very memorable. She started working more on the TV since that year after her performance in coming-off-age film, Plum Blossom. She acted in Take Care of My Cat and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, both her films Spring Bears Love and Tube were unsuccessful. She took rest after this for a little while and wanted to make a fresh start again after some time. She took many photographs during this break which can be found on her blog and in the published books of her photo-essay. She again continued with acting in Rosemary and Country Princess.
In 2004, she started her theater stage acting in Sunday Seoul which is different from the South Korean film bearing an identical title. In the year 2005, she did the role of a student who joined a band in Linda Linda Linda, a Japanese film and also the role of a divorced lady in Omnibus television series named Beating Heart. She took archery training for several months for The Host Click to look into! >> Read More... in 2006. She again came back to TV shows through How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor and Someday. She won accolades in 2009 for a Japanese Drama film "Air Doll". She played as a high school teacher in 2010 in the Master of Study and as a night singer in a club in Gloria. Her film named 'As One' was a real life story of the world championship of table tennis which was held at Chiba in Japan during 1991. Back to Korean films, she acted in Dohee-ya in 2014 which was directed and produced by July Jung and Lee Chang-dong respectively.
She bagged the accolade for the best actress at Asian Film Awards. She appeared in a web film of 90 minutes which was under the direction of the commercial director, her older brother Bae Doo-han. It was titled as Red Carpet Dream which is a biopic of the way she dreamed to become an actress in her teens and also her acting career i.e all her 20 years acting. The film was sponsored by the MAC Cosmetics and was also commissioned for its 20 years anniversary.
