Her parents are Irish Americans. Her mother Mary Bridget was a school teacher and her father Edward Bradley Moynahan was a scientist and former Director of University Massachusetts Amherst. Sean and Andy are her two brothers. When she was seven years old her family shifted to Longmeadow in Massachusetts. She graduated from Longmeadow High School in 1989. She was the captain of girls’ basketball, Soccer and lacrosse team. She considered herself as a tomboy in her childhood.

She took up a modeling career after graduation but she also admitted that she never grew up reading fashion magazines. She attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
