Alok Ranjan Dasgupta was a popular Bengali poet specializing in literature and plays and translated them into English and German. He also worked as a creative translator of many German and French essays in Bengali not to miss the interesting sections of world literature. He studied at eminent institutions like Viswa Bharati, St Xavier’s College, Presidency College, and University of Calcutta finally to receive a PhD degree in Indian Lyric poetry. He taught Comparative Literature and Bengali at Jadavpur University before leaving for Germany on a Humboldt Foundation Fellowship. Since 1971 he had been associated with teaching at the department of South Asia Institute at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He was awarded the Goethe Medal in 1985, as a recognition of his collaborative effort to bring two cultures unanimously together. He also received Ananda Puraskar, Prabasi Bharatiya Samman, Rabindra Puraskar, and the Sahitya Akademy Award for his poems Marami Karat.

They were keen to preserve the legacy of Jeebananda Das and Nirendranath Chakraborty. Together, they helped the Bengali community to explore areas other than Rabindranath Tagore by introducing the initial stages of modernist Bengali poetry. He regularly contributed to Bengali journals such as Krittibash and Kabita. His collections include Jauban Baul, Nishiddha Kojagori, Roktakto Jharokha, Nirbasan etc. Along with Shankha Ghosh, he published a collection comprising translations of world poetry named Sapta Sindhu Dawsh Diganta in 1962. While teaching comparative literature at Jadavpur University, he met eminent pioneers such as Nabaneeta Dev Sen A well-known Indian Writer, Poet, Novelist, and Ac >> Read More... and Sudhindranath Dutta. He breathed his last at Heidelberg but his impeccable impression on the young, enlightened intellectual minds are not to be forgotten.
