Banashree Sengupta was an Indian singer born on 6th May 1945 in Chinsurah, West Bengal, into a musically affluent family. Her father Shri Shailendranath Roy and her grandfather were famous classical singers. Her father exposed her to Indian classical music at a young age, fostering her talent. She finished her final examination at Banimandir Balika Vidyalaya. Banashree Sengupta polished her vocal skills under the tutelage of numerous famous music gurus. Shri Rajen Bandyopadhyay taught her Indian classical music while she was at Chinsurah. Following her marriage to Sri Shanti Sengupta in 1965, she relocated to Kolkata, where she studied many musical genres from renowned exponents. They were performers of Khayal, Najrul Geeti and adhunik songs.

Her commitment to learning from these experts contributed to her diverse vocal qualities. Banashree Sengupta's career began in 1964 when she began singing on Akashvani, where she demonstrated her diverse singing talent by performing Geet, Bhajan, Adhunik, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, and children's songs. She published her first album in 1966 on the HMV label (SAREGAMA HMV). Banashree Sengupta's outstanding career included memorable roles in films such as Tapan Sinha's "Harmonium" and Yatrik's "Chhinnapatra." Among her memorable interpretations were "Aaj bikeler daake," "Dur aakashe tomar sur," "Andhokaarke bhoy kori," and "Sundor boner sundori gaachh," among many more.

Despite her primary focus on music, Banashree Sengupta achieved literary success. She published an article in a newspaper on July 23rd, 2016. The article beautifully portrayed her neighborhood, Argya Abasan on Pratapaditya Road in Kolkata. This article demonstrated her aptitude for vividly portraying her experiences and surroundings in writing. Banashree Sengupta was an ardent traveler who brought her songs worldwide.

She traveled to the Soviet Union as part of a government mission in 1986. She has performed at various international events throughout the years, including the North America Bango Sammiloni in Toronto in 1998 and the Basanta Utsab in Toronto in 2011. Her international performances took her to places throughout England.
