Bimal Dey is a notable director. He was born in Barishal. Dey was an active participant in the freedom struggle and had been imprisoned by the British for several years. He worked as a film director after the partition and has produced more than 28 films. He produced Satyajit Ray’s Charulata and Mahanagar. He is the recipient of several national and international awards. ‘Malyadaan’ received the National Award for the best film in 1970. ‘Chinnamul’ and ‘Saat Parkey Bandha’ also won him many international awards. He received many praises for his last movie ‘Naukadubi’ based on one of Tagore’s classics. Dey was a chairman of the jury for the Indian Panorama Section for the Bangalore Film Festival held in 1992. He died on December 1st 1997 in Calcutta due to a prolonged illness.
