Analysis
Kolai seems to be Kumar’s attempt at bringing the future to Kollywood. To make this movie a mystery-based thriller like no other, a new setting has been adapted that relies heavily on CGI and visual effects. But this is where they misunderstand the mentality of audience, as this takes out the sense of realism from the movie, thus making it unappealing for the viewers. The film majorly falters with its screenplay, many twists and turns are introduced to keep the viewers intrigued. Further, these twists aren’t necessarily resolved to give a proper closure to the conflicts raised. This leaves many questions unanswered for us, one of the major factors contributing to its low rating.
Kolai was also harshly criticized for its predictable plot, and rightly so. The screenplay isn’t written articulately to weave mystery for viewers and keep them on the edge of their seats. The audience was able to speculate on the killer before the entire plot was disclosed, making this movie the least interesting for them. Simply put, the list of flaws outnumbered the few merits it had and miserably failed the audience.

Verdict
Kolai is one of those films that made an attempt to change the course of the Tamil cinematic industry but failed. It disappoints a major part of the audience but could be a mesmerizing experience for some. It is advised that next time you search for a great mystery-thriller, you cannot rely on this movie.
