2 States tells the love story of a culturally opposite couple –Krish, a Punjabi Munda meets Ananya, a Tamil Ponnu in IIM Ahmedabad and fall in love.Next follows “Meet The Parents” showing their struggle to make their parents see that their love for each other. Adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, it reflects on the belief that when you marry the person, you marry their entire family, and it becomes necessary for the couple that their parents understand that their love is above the cultural differences.

Plot: A North Indian Punjabi boy from Delhi Krish, and Ananya, a South Indian Tamilian Brahmin from Chennai, meet at the IIM- Ahmedabad College, and they fall in love. They decide to get married but only with their parents’ permission. Hell breaks loose when their parents meet each other at the convocation ceremony but end up hating each other and oppose the wedding due to cultural clashes. The tale then follows about the couple’s trials and tribulations to sustain their love while convincing their parents for their marriage.

Analysis: A romantic movie that has freshness in its casting, treatment, and the characters. The story travels around the country as the couple falls in love and they struggle for their families’ acceptance that starts at Ahmedabad, then to Delhi, next to Chennai and then back to Delhi and finally to Chennai again. Abhishek Varman Abhishek Varman is a well-known Indian filmmaker, >> Read More... , who marks his debut as a director, proves to be a talented storyteller depicting the love story of an urban couple and their struggle to make things work between the two families. Also, Certain Sequences depicting the digs taken at each other's cultures, young men in a fix between their conservative mothers and their choice of life-partner and portrayal of the strained relationship between an abusive father and son makes it relatable to the audience.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music gels well with the mood of the movie especially Mast Magan sung by Arijit Singh Most famous for his songs in Aashiqui 2, Arijit Si >> Read More... & Chinmayi Sripada. The film peeks into the mindset of the two families in such a scenario. The diverse cultures, the discomfort, and the pressures when people talk about inter-caste relationships, the stereotypes, and hypocrisy involved against the tough love of the couple and their determination to win their parents' trust.

Star Performances: Arjun Kapoor plays a whole different character compared to his earlier films (ISHQZAADE, GUNDAY) with a realistic and convincing performance as sober and unconventional urban lover. Alia Bhatt exudes freshness in her portrayal of ‘Shudh’ Tamil Brahmin and her eyes and expressions bring the charm into her character of a career-oriented IIM- A grad student. The supporting cast is stellar. Ronit Roy is terrific as an alcoholic and abusive father with repentance in his heart. Amrita Singh is loud and boisterous as the dominating Punjabi mom. Revathi is a delight as Alia's mother especially in the sequence where she sings a medley ofTamil and Bollywood songs. Shiv Subramaniam as Alia's father is excellent. Achint Kaur as Arjun’s Aunt provides enough support.

What’s there?

1. Crackling Chemistry between Arjun and Alia.

2. Performances of the lead couple and other supporting characters.

3. Hummable and Peppy Music of Shanker-Ehsaan-Loy.

4. Stunning Visuals of Delhi and Chennai by Cinematographer Binod Pradhan.

5. Intense Scenes between Ronit Roy and Arjun Kapoor making it almost alive.

What’s not there?

1. The Melodrama Post Interval is contrasting with the smooth First Half.

2. Unnecessary Song And Dance Sequence at Arjun’s Cousin Wedding conflicting with the dowry issue at the wedding.

3. Cinematic liberties were taken to exaggerate the cultural oddness of both communities and not to emphasize the most significant aspects of their cultures.

Verdict: 2 States is a feel good love story showing that it's not about communities and it's about people, love, and acceptance. Watch it with someone special.
