The TV series narrates the story of four sisters, Kaveri, Ganga, Yamuna, and Narmadha, navigating life after their father, Santhanam's death, striving to establish themselves in society. Mahanadi is the life story of these sisters who once lived harmoniously with their parents but now find themselves in distressing situations due to the absence of their father. Set in the serene town of Kodaikanal, the storyline explores the challenges of the mother and daughters as they cope with the void left by the father's demise.

Their father, who owned a company, had a rivalry with a man named Pasupathi, known for employing cunning tactics to cause harm. Santhanam checked upon a property he had purchased and discovered it was now owned by someone else, leading to his shock and subsequent demise. The tragedy leaves the girls with no financial means to sustain themselves, forcing them to sell their possessions and move from one place to another.

Amidst their struggles, the hero, Kumaran, a tailor, emerges. He is aware of their dilemma and extends his support. Kumaran's tailor shop showcases images of Ganga, whose father desires a grand wedding for her upcoming marriage. However, the family is oblivious to the mysterious source of funds for the wedding. Santhanam, desperate for money, approaches Pasupathy and faces disappointment.

Heartbroken and unable to finance his daughter's wedding, Santhanam is found dead on the day of Ganga's wedding. The narrative then delves into how the four sisters and their mother navigate life without a paternal figure as they perform his last rites.
