Puthu Puthu Arthangal is a Tamil subversion of the Hindi soap opera Ek Nayi Pehchaan. The serial was first aired in December 2013. It soon ended with the last episode being broadcasted in September 2014. The story has been written by Monali Sen Chowdhury.
Anil Deshmukh has given the dialogues. Malvika Asthana has written the screenplay. Hemant R Prabhu is the director of the soap opera. During its short time on air, Sony TV broadcasted 181 episodes of the soap opera.
Alam Khan and
Sarika Dhillon, are the main cast of the daily soap. The show begins with the introduction of a well-reputed family in Mumbai. Suresh Modi owns Sharda Textiles. He is married to his wife, Sharda. They have three kids together; Latika, who is married, Chirag and Karan.
Sakshi is in love with Aditya. They both plan to elope the city by train. Aditya ditches her in the last minute. Sharda meets her on the train, as they were sitting inside the same coach. Sakshi is heart broken and needs some consoling. Sharda does her best and advises her to go back home. Suresh Modi decides to get Karan married to the daughter of his business partner. Karan is opposed to this marriage, and he will only marry on his terms. Sakshi is the daughter of the business person.
Sharda is surprised to learn that, which can be seen on her face. Meanwhile, Sakshi is happy to see Sharda and is happy that she will be part of this family. After she is married, she sees Sharda giving thumb prints to sign documents. She realizes that she lacks self-confidence and is illiterate. She doesn't know how to read because of which nobody in the house respects her. Sakshi sees this and plans to make her literate. She makes Sharda join an adult school where she will learn how to read. Initially, everyone is against the idea, but slowly they respect Sharda for the woman she is.

It was the debut television show of Bollywood actresses Padmini Kolhapure and Poonam Dhillon. The story is mainly about women’s empowerment. The show focuses on the relationship between daughter-in-law and her mother-in-law. The story starts with the introduction of Modi family, Suresh Modi who is the owner of Sharda Textiles, Sharda, his wife, Karan & Chirag, his sons, and Latika, his married daughter. During a train journey, Sharda meets a heart-broken Sakshi as the man, Aditya, who was supposed to elope with her ditched her, so Sharda consoles her. Sakshi turns out to be the daughter of Suresh’s business partner whom Suresh wants to get married to Karan.
Sakshi is happy to meet Sharda and agrees to marry Karan, but Karan does not want to get married. After much thought, Karan agrees to marry Sakshi. After marriage, Sakshi is shocked to see family’s behaviour towards Sharda who is a perfect housewife but lacks self-confidence because of her being illiterate. When Sharda gets humiliated by Suresh in front of all family members, Sakshi is determined to make her literate, independent and confident, and thus enrols her in an education program in a coaching class for which Sharda initially gets no support from family.
Sakshi keeps on encouraging Sharda, and finally, she does superbly well in her academics. A twist comes after the revelation of the Suresh’s another marriage with Pallavi. It is also revealed that Suresh has two children with Pallavi. After coming to know everything, Karan leaves the Modi house & also quits his job, and later Sharda and Sakshi also leaves the house. Karan tries to acquire job without using his surname and also gets one job, but due to some misunderstandings, he quits it and remains without a job.
Sharda starts a factory which Shanaya, Pallavi’s daughter, decides to join to ruin it, and Latika stays in Sharda textiles for stopping Pallavi to get benefits of her hard-work. Pallavi is shown to be having last stage bone cancer which she refuses to disclose to her family. Sharda comes to know about Pallavi’s health because of confusion in the hospital between Sakshi and Pallavi. Sharda convinces Pallavi to tell about her health to family and that she will take care of her children after her death.
Pallavi tells everyone with a wish that Sharda, Sakshi, and Karan will come back to Modi house and everyone understands her except Shanaya who denies accepting Sharda as her mom after Pallavi’s death. Later, Pallavi is shown to be a good character. Shanaya see Pallavi’s will according to which she has given power of attorney of her business and all property to Sharda, and also that property will be divided among Karan, Chirag, Latika, Shanaya and Aarav which makes Shanaya furious that why kids of Sharda will have a share in her mom’s property.
Shanaya keeps insulting and humiliating Sharda as she thinks her to be a manipulator. Pallavi makes a plan so that Suresh realize his behaviour towards Sharda and the plan is successful as he apologizes to Sharda. Pallavi dies, and Sharda convinces Karan and Sakshi to stay in the house forever. Shanaya wants to leave the house but gets stopped by Sharda and later plots so that Sharda herself asks her to leave which Sakshi comes to know. According to her plan, Shanaya starts provoking Latika against Sharda and Karan also learns her intention.
Later, Sakshi reveals everything to the family. So, what will the family do after knowing about Shanaya? Will Shanaya ever realize her mistakes and also the goodness of Sharda? For all these keep watching, Puthu Puthu Arthangal.
