Plot
Monichan(Mammootty), a farmer, moves to a city with his family for better facilities, opportunities, and education. His life takes a turn when he gets involved in illegal activities influenced by anti-social elements.
Star performance
Mammootty is doing the heavy lifting here, his character being gullible would frustrate you and wouldn’t seem to empathize with, he lacks in emotional sequences. His transition from a naive farmer to an urban shot is abrupt and unconvincing, which has more to do with the writing. The female characters are more for the reactions there characters are not even flesh out. The rest of the actors have also done a formidable job.
Analysis
The film wants to delve into many topics better future, city’s vs village, good parenting, child abuse. But is confused in its narrative. The protagonist is a gullible farmer who is easily influenced by the city people. His naivety would frustrate the audience. The family characters are mainly used for the reactions or emotional connect. The film delves into the child abuse topic out of nowhere. The film’s focus in the first half is to have a better life and suddenly drops other themes the moment they shift to a city. Monichan, being caught up with the work, ignores his family and one day his daughter goes missing. There isn’t anything memorable in the first half. It feels like they are ticking boxes with the themes they wanted to focus on. The climax is messed up. Because the film wanted to delve into many themes, it forgot to build the narrative. Climax some would find painful, others would question its existence. The makers were confused on what ground to end the film but got confused in the entirety. Actors did a fine job, Mammootty is doing the heavy lifting here and is convincing in his naive portrayal but lacks in the emotional sequences, Lakshmi Sharma has done a fantastic job, so does Nivedita. The cinematography by Santosh Thudyil is impressive, capturing beautiful shots of the village and the city. Palunku is a film that wanted to focus on so many things that it ended up confusing and rushed in its narrative.

Verdict
Palunku wanted to delve into the synergy of rural and urban life but was cluttered everywhere. Can be watched on a random weekend binge.
