Plot
Sony is a villager from the central region of Kerala. He is large-hearted and does his best for the entire village, from conducting a marriage ceremony to organizing a funeral with all the traditions intact. However, beneath this benevolent soul lies a secret, known only to his family, who fear the worst if the reality comes out one day. Who is Sony in reality?
Star Performances
Don Palathara has created a phenomenal world with his able writing. The film might not be flawless, but Don Palathara has ensured that the audiences don’t leave the hall disappointed.
The technical crew should be lauded for giving their best in making this engaging thriller. Each person has performed to the T.
The best part about this film, however, is the presence of Vinay Forrt, as the lead character Sony. His layered personality is something that is both irresistible, as well as menacing in equal parts. Very few actors can lay claim to such an impressive performance.
Analysis
Abuse of any kind is unacceptable. However, what is even more disturbing is the way abuse is normalized, and kept under wraps in a ‘civilized manner’. We have often heard of toxic behavior, but have hardly seen how it looks like. ‘Family’ does attempt in this direction and a bold one at that.
The film begins with an insight into rural Kerala and introduces us to an affable character, Sony. He will remind many people of the friendly Alok aka Alu from ‘Ludo’. The only difference that is Sony is not as naïve as Alu, and his reality will leave most of the viewers shaken to the core. That is a victory in itself for the narrative.
The best part about this film is that it is far from boring. Special mention to both cinematographer Jaleel Badusha and editor Don Palathara for the same. They have kept the runtime short, crisp, and effective, without diluting the essence of the screenplay in any way.
The film does have its share of flaws. However, they are very few, and have almost negligible impact, thanks to the brilliant performances of the ensemble fact, especially Vinay Forrt, who single-handedly drives this film with his brilliant rendition of Sony.

‘Family’ looks like just another social drama from Malayalam cinema. However, the more you invest your time, the more you are shocked by the twists and turns with this movie. For those who are fans of good psychological thrillers, ‘Family’ is more than just a welcome surprise. Do watch this film in the cinema halls if you haven’t!
