CAST & CREW
A refreshing change, coming from Vishal Bharadwaj in the face of the Blue Umbrella. The movie is innocent in its way; some call it a children’s movie that is a must watch for adults, to harp on the simple things of life.
Set in an idyllic village of Himachal Pradesh with a sparse population. The story is about a girl, Biniya, who owns a beautiful blue umbrella, which instantly makes her a star of the village. Khatri, a tea stall owner, has his eyes on the umbrella.
With time he loses his peace of mind, leaving morals behind him, in his insane desire of its possession. One day the girl loses the pretty umbrella. The police conduct a raid on Khatri’s tea stall. Humiliated and deeply saddened, he decides to order one umbrella for himself, from the city.
The striking red umbrella, after its receiving, makes him the star, and gets him a newfound attention from the villagers. Meanwhile, the little girl is unable to cope from the loss of her prized possession.
The story may not be an extraordinarily well-crafted one, but it teaches us some simple lessons of life, which we may forgo with time. Pankaj Kapoor never leaves us disappointed with his superb skills and his body language which make the character alive.
