ANI Sues Netflix Over ‘IC 814’

The troubles for Netflix India are far from over.

According to the latest reports, ANI has decided to take legal action against the OTT bigwig for copyright infringement. Netflix India allegedly used archived footage from ANI for their latest web series ‘IC 814’, for which no permission was taken from the news agency at all.

To make matters worse, out of the six episodes, four episodes have archived footage from ANI that were used without permission. Now either ‘IC 814’ has those four episodes removed, or face legal action from ANI.

‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ is a web series based on the infamous 1999 hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight IC 814. The hijackers had demanded the release of three notorious terrorists: Maulana Masood Azhar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, and Sheikh Mohammad Zargar. After stopovers at Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai, the plane landed at Kandahar, where it stayed until the terrorists were released.

The web series has been under the radar for its portrayal of the hijacking. While the hijackers actually used Hindu codenames, other elements like portraying them as humane and concerning, and putting all the blame on the Indian establishment, apart from glorifying the extremism, were heavily criticized upon. For even the neutral moviebuffs, the story was far from being impressive, let alone accurate.
