Plot

Following his return from the United States, Nikhil’s family scouts endlessly for a suitable girl. However, Nikhil has already decided to marry a foreigner, Nikki. Though not very happy about it, Nikhil’s parents somehow agree.

Unknown to them, Nikhil is using Nikki as cover, since he is in love with Aamna, whom he met in the US as well. Owing to their different religious backgrounds, Nikhil knows it is next to impossible, and hence he devises this harebrained scheme. Will he succeed?

Star Performances

The musical album of this film is one of the most underrated pieces of work ever heard. It is groovy, as well soothing to the ears.

Robbie Grewal has chosen a rather bold subject, and delivers an entertaining product that is both endearing and intriguing. For her debut appearance on silver screen, Aamna Sharif does leave a lasting impression.

Analysis

‘Appearances can be deceptive.’ The same is true about ‘Aloo Chaat.’ By the looks of it, it appears as another run-of-the-mill comedy, involving a love triangle. While the basic plot indicates the same, there is much more to it than anyone can imagine.

An NRI returns to his home in Lajpat Nagar. However, as any other middle-class family would want, he is bombarded with several proposals for an arranged marriage. However, the NRI is already in love with a girl, who is poles apart, both by personality and ethnicity.

The plot narrative takes the rather predictable route, and in some instances, the narrative may reduce the interest. However, the narrative takes a quirky twist, and soon it becomes a comic take on inter-faith relationships, something almost unimaginable to many Indian filmmakers.

In terms of performances, the cast has done a decent, if not an outstanding job. Aftab and Aamna are likable as the star-crossed lovers. ‘Aloo Chaat’ is a sweet and spicy comedy, that has a deeper message embedded within the narrative. Despite the predictable tropes, the acting performances, as well as the soundtrack make the overall experience a pleasant surprise. Watch it if you are a fan of simple and sweet entertainment!
