After the first movie in the X-Men franchise, Singer is back again with another thrilling and dramatic X-Men movie as we jump back and forth with the Wolverine from the 70s to the dystopian near future where the lives of mutants and humans are both at risk.
Plot: Logan has had to go back to the past in the 60s with the help of Kitty, to seek the help of young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, the time when ruthless robots known as Sentinels were created by the military scientist Boliver Trask, to hunt down mutants. However, Mystique is already out to kill Trask so that he can’t make the robots, but she doesn’t know is that her plans of killing Trask will fail. Logan, who has been sent from the future knows, that when Mystique fails, she will be captured by the scientists and her mutant powers will be used to make the Sentinels stronger and invincible. Now it is up to, Logan, Charles and Erik to stop Mystique from attempting to kill Trask, because if she does, then the Sentinels who are coming to attack them at the current time would kill everyone, mutants and humans alike.
Even though the present day of the movie has not been shown clearly, but the time period of the 60s and the 70s have been orchestrated with many key elements like Kennedy’s assassination, Richard Nixon’s presidential time, even the costumes and hairstyles. Moreover, this movie is more about the contrast and the transformation of the characters of Charles and Erik over the period, with Logan remaining in the middle as the only link. It has concentrated more on the suspense and the thrill of the story as it is shown how they are running out of time, both in the past and in the future as they are trying to escape from the unmerciful clutches of the Sentinels instead of filling it up with explosions and meaningless destruction.
Even with some new faces as the new mutants that Logan comes across in the past and seek help from, the old ones have managed to keep the limelight in a well-deserved way with their amazing performances. The mind battles that Charles had to go through, the emotions of raw vengeance on Mystique’s body language, and the desperation of Logan to complete the task on which so many lives depend on, is a great experience.
Verdict:Â To this new, more humane and yet super movie in the X-Men franchise delivered to us in a fresh and thrilling package, I give this movie 4 out of 5 victories.
