Her parents are veteran Gujarati stage artists, and thus, Patel grew up in a theater environment. She completed her schooling in Fort Convent School. She actively participated in plays during her school days. She was also the part of a play directed by Pearl Padmasree. She completed her studies at Elphinstone College, University of Mumbai. Later she got acting training from Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Patel mainly works in Hindi and English films.
