Plot

Kevin, a man suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, lives life with 23 different personalities. The fourth personality, an entity named the Beast, strives to assert dominance and take control of Kevin to establish his goal of ridding the world of all those who are impure- those who haven't endured suffering. He abducts three young women who manipulate his different personalities to escape his basement.

Star performance

James McAvoy is brilliant in his role as Kevin and is the very essence of the entire film, in addition to  Anya Taylor- Joy, who is as equally competent and fascinating in her delivery.

Analysis

Split is a psychological thriller that is the second movie from the Unbreakable Trilogy, with the other two being Unbreakable and Glass. It is a brilliantly executed film with superb execution and a highly intriguing plot that is equal parts tension and thrill. The cinematography and the direction is stunning. The cast performances are equally riveting, with James McAvoy delivering yet another flawless performance. Anya Taylor- Joy brings life to the screen through her phenomenal acting.

Split provides viewers with a twisted sort of psychological horror, maintaining a chilling atmosphere and peak tension throughout the entirety of the movie. However, the movie does get a few things wrong- especially where the plot is concerned. James McAvoy’s character suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, and although he plays his character to perfection, the psychological disorder in question is highly exaggerated, and could even be deemed as unrealistic at points. The movie missed a chance to spread awareness and normalize such disorders and instead glamorized it for the big screen.Other questionable plot points that pop up include female protagonist Casey’s traumatic past, which feels like it’s been put up for shock value, rather than add to the fundamental foundation of her character. Aside from these flaws in the storyline, Split is a fantastic watch for psychological thriller enthusiasts and does not fail to leave a significant impact on viewers.

What’s There?

  • Atmospheric music
  • Brilliant cinematography
  • Fresh plot
  • Superb acting

What’s Not There?

  • Flaws in the plot-line and negative portrayal of issues that need to be normalized.

Verdict

Split is one of the most fascinating and intriguing psychological thrillers in today’s film climate. With a fresh plot, stellar performances by a star-studded cast and superb cinematography, Split will make for a highly engaging and gripping watch. Aside from minor flaws in the plot-linesuch as the blatant glorification of rape as a horror motive and a glamorized version of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Split is a fantastic film and will keep you hooked till the very end.
