Star Performances
The only good thing to remember about this film are a few acting performances. If not for the acting performances, the film was anything but watchable.
Analysis
Do you remember ‘Child’s Play’? If yes, you must have an idea of the stuffed toy which is possessed by the soul of an evil guy, and how it wreaks havoc on the life of a family.
The makers of ‘Imaginary’ probably decided to bring the same concept with a ‘teddy bear’ twist. The only exception is that it is not even entertaining, forget being terrifying, or chilling in any aspect.
The film had an interesting concept on paper, about how an abandoned teddy bear yearns for revenge. However, the creativity never came out in execution. Some of the scenes in this movie were plain boring, and almost tested the patience of the viewers. This is when the entire length of the movie is less than 1 hour and 45 minutes!
‘Imaginary’ makes us wonder whether Hollywood is losing the talent of making slick horror movies that make you numb with fear. We might be going overboard, but some recent Indian movies have sequences that are a hundred times better than the current horror movies Hollywood is offering, including ‘Imaginary’!
The cinematography is just about okay. It has no wow factor associated with it, thanks to the average direction and the shoddy writing as displayed by Jeff Wadlow. It might not be as cringe as the ‘Winnie the Pooh’ horror series, but it is certainly not worth spending your hard earned money for either!
The only saving grace about this film is the acting, in parts. DeWanda Wise as the protagonist Jessica does her best to make the role look as convincing. Some of the supporting actors, including Betty Buckley do their best to make this film slightly watchable.
What’s There
• Only a few acting performances here and there
What’s Not There
• Bad editing
• Below average direction
• Shoddy writing
• A script that has anything but horror
• Average visuals
Verdict
‘Imaginary’ is the movie that was good only on paper. The execution of the concept was anything but impressive. Only a few acting performance made this film slightly watchable.
