The film is made under the banner of production companies like Endgame Entertainment, Vendian Entertainment, and KrautPack Entertainment.

Plot

The movie starts with a secret meeting of Edward Snowden, documentarian Laura Poitras, and journalist Glenn Greenwald in Hong Kong. Their meeting happens because Snowden finally decides to reveal the deep dark side of the National Security Agency by proving that they conduct illegal mass surveillance. The movie launches into a flashback, which shows Snowden training rigorously to get accepted into the Special Forces Click to look into! >> Read More... of the US Army. However, due to certain physical injuries, he is discharged from active on-field duties and is asked to try and serve the country in other ways. Snowden applies in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and undergoes various tests. Snowden completes his test in less than half the time limit and is accepted onto the team. But soon, the unethical intentions of the agency made him resign from his post. Later, he joins the NSA in Japan but learns that the US plants malware into the software of the nations to which the country is allied so that those countries could be shut down if they ever attack the US. Later, Snowden also finds the illegal ways being used by various agencies to launch attacks on Pakistan. Thus, overwhelmed with confusion and disbelief, he transfers all relevant files to an SD card and flies to Hong Kong to get them published, bringing the audience back to the present timeline.

Star Performance

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance is quite commendable. He keeps the film’s energy on varying levels, depending on the situation playing out on the screen. His acting is natural, keeping the audience involved and on the edge of their seats, waiting for his next moves.

Analysis

The movie shows the lead character being vigilant and keen-eyed with a sense of ethics and morals. This forms the base of his thought processes and actions around him. Snowden can be one of the best thrilling political dramas over time. Snowden’s frustration reached its peak as he kept working for numerous organisations that used illegal methods to access the information of other countries. By the time he made the final decision to hand over the secret information to the journalist, he was confused in his mind about right or wrong. This dilemma makes the whole movie intense.

What’s There?

  • It is an almost perfect movie to prove that cyber-safety is a myth and malicious intent can lurk in any corner and in any form.
  • The previous Army training of Snowden helps him uncover harsh truths about some of the most important organisations in the US.

What’s Not There?

  • The audience might expect a more polished work from Oliver Stone.
  • Some details of the case differ from the real-life accounts of Edward Snowden.

Verdict

The interesting yet terrifying events that Edward Snowden faced in real life are brought onto the screen by the director with slight variations here and there. The movie is an excellent watch for viewers who like to experience thrill and tension through the scenes on their screens. The film debunks the myth of such big organisations and agencies promising to not use other people’s data. The movie also highlights various crimes and acts of terrorism that can be committed by using technology in unethical ways. Thus, people should be alert and aware enough to not fall prey to such scams online.
