Plot

The film is set in the 1890s and follows Ephraim Winslow, played by Robert Pattinson, as he arrives at an isolated island for his four week term of being a lighthouse keeper, and work under the supervision of Thomas Wake, played by William Dafoe. Wake makes Winslow do all the heavy work on the island and forbids him from entering the lantern room. Winslow has hallucinations of monsters and logs in the sea, and is annoyed by a one-eyed seagull but is warned not to harm it as it would bring bad luck. On the day before his departure, Winslow kills the one-eyed seagull after being attacked by it. That night, a vicious storm hits the island, thus preventing Winslow from being evacuated. Their ration was spoiled by the storm and instead of reserve ration they find liquor. The film follows them as they slowly lose their sanity on the island, fight starvation, and drink themselves to oblivion.

Star Performance

Robert Pattinson and William Dafoe deliver spectacular performances in the film, and perfectly portray their characters descent into madness.

Analysis

The film is grey and has a gloomy atmosphere throughout. The characters’ agony makes it feel like viewers are witnessing their worst nightmare unfold with great detail.
