Plot
The film’s protagonist is Gloria, played by Julianne Moore. Gloria is a middle-aged divorcee with two children Anne, played by Caren Pistorious, and Peter, played by Michael Cera. Gloria likes to spend her evenings partying and dancing in clubs that play 70s and 80s music. On one such outing, Gloria met Arnold, played by John Turturro and they hit it off and start dating. Arnold tells Gloria that he still supports his adult daughters and his ex-wife, which Gloria finds weird. Gloria introduces Arnold to her children and ex-husband on her son Peter’s birthday, but Arnold humiliates her by leaving in the middle of the party because he felt left out. Arnold and Gloria got back together after Arnold apologized, but Gloria felt suffocated in their relationship because he always prioritized his ex-wife and daughters over her. The film follows Gloria on her journey towards self-acceptance, her flailing relationship, and her affinity for letting it loose by dancing.
Star Performance
Julianne Moore is absolutely spectacular as Gloria. The film revolves around her character, and Moore carries the film with ease in one of the best performances of her career.
Analysis
The film is well-paced and the plot does not linger on any moment unnecessarily. Gloria is the story of a middle-aged woman living a spontaneous life, doing whatever her heart desires such as singing, dancing, drinking, and partying. Moore gave a stellar performance as Gloria.
