This film is based on the book "The Marsh King's Daughter" written by Karen Dionne.

Plot

Helena leads an ordinary life with a happy family. Her life takes a turn when her estranged father escapes from prison. She is forced to confront her past and the dark truth that her father is the infamous Marsh King, who kept her and her mother captive in the wilderness for years. Helena has to find the courage to face the demons and outsmart her father before he tries to hunt her and her family.

Star Performance

The performance delivered by Daisy Ridley as Helena is extraordinary. She perfectly portrays a woman with a dark past, filled with trauma. The scenes showing her struggling with PTSD are stirring. The part in the movie where she panics about her family being hurt and relives her memories is pretty emotional and raw. Brooklynn Prince's performance as young Helena is remarkable. Ben Mendelsohn stole the show as Jacob aka The Marsh King. Gil Birmingham as Clark Bekkum brings a sense of quiet and a touch of humor to the movie. Caren Pistorius's performance as Helena's mother is worth appreciating. The rest of the cast have done a great job of playing their roles realistically.

Analysis

The movie revolves around a young woman named Helena (Daisy Ridley) and her family. When Helena's imprisoned father (Ben Mendelsohn) escapes from the jail, she is forced to face her past and the lessons taught by her father, for her family's survival. The movie perfectly captures the struggles of a woman and her mother (Caren Pistorius), who are the victims of abduction and gaslighting. The plot takes place around how Helena (Daisy Ridley) can incorporate the past teachings of Jacob aka The Marsh King (Ben Mendelsohn), and survive his attempt to kidnap Helena's daughter. The plot thickens when Helena decides to confront her past and face her demons to outmaneuver the man who taught her survival. The scenes between young Helena (Brooklynn Prince) and Jacob (Ben Mendelsohn) are quite interesting and traumatizing at the same time. Her struggles to realize the truth about her father and his manipulation are shown excellently.

What's There?

• Daisy Ridley and Ben Mendelsohn capture the audience with their performance.

• Brooklynn Prince's performance is engaging.

• The story is drafted efficiently based on the book "The Marsh King's Daughter" by Karen Dionne.

• Gil Birmingham adds humor to the movie.

• The visual of the Marsh is captured well.

What's Not There?

• The movie holds a few minor flaws here and there.

• The conclusion of the movie is clumsy.

Verdict

The story perfectly portrays pain, betrayal, loss, emotional vulnerability, manipulation, and the strength required to face one's past. The movie ends clumsily, leaving the audience a little bit confused. The pace of the film sags here and there, making the story look less thrilling than in the book. The extraordinary acting of the remarkable cast makes the movie worth watching.
