Plot: A high-profile pair decides to holiday and relaxes in an exotic island, after Marianne’s throat surgery. Suddenly, swarmed by iconoclast record producer and old flame Harry ( Ralph Fiennes “He who must not be named!” as often uttered in Ha >> Read More... ) unexpectedly arrives with his daughter Penelope ( Dakota Johnson Dakota Johnson is an American actress and model. S >> Read More... ) and interrupts their holiday, bringing with him an A-bomb blast of delirious nostalgia from which there can be no rescue. What starts off seeming as the life of high-profile people, turns out to be a flash of sartorial lightning to the screen.
Penelope’s not even sure Harry is her father, which adds the icky possibility of incest to this feral foursome’s many possible permutations, though it’s hard to imagine where else she could have gotten her penchant for pushing people’s buttons.
Analysis: Ralph Fiennes puts up and insanely believable performance, with intense sexual chemistry with Dakota Johnson. The actors put up a beautiful, slick performance with mesmerizing performances and smooth screenplay. The flow of the story is smooth, with hardly a dull moment, which keeps you constantly engaged in the performance, with each actor living up to their name. It is indeed satisfying and a bit disturbing to see the amount of intense sexual chemistry in the love rhombus, but will keep you engaged almost till the end. The end, which is supposed to capture you, fails. The intensity dips towards the end, and the over-hyped story drops.
Star Performances: Matthias Schoenaerts’s performance stands out as compared to the rest of the cast, with him being the prominent gem in his scenes. The chemistry builds up to sort of a love rhombus, instead of the traditional love triangle. Penelope stuns with her demeanor.
What’s there?
1.Stunning Visuals. Beautiful scenes on a lost paradise island capture your interest.
2. Star- studded performances backed up with strong direction, is a strong thing to bank upon.
3. The erotic angle is really intense and manages to bring out a whole new dimension to the otherwise seemingly straightforward flick.
What’s not there?
1. This may be reaching out, but the chemistry between the father and his daughter could have been portrayed in a different perspective so that the film could have managed to mess with the audience at a psychological level.
Verdict: Very interesting take on the modern relationship, being layered with dark, satirical comedy, it can engage and mess with the audience. Not meant for the weak-hearted. Definitely a good film, that deserves a watch!
