,” the leader of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had been announced as a convict of treason by the Madras Special court. Justice Shanthi announced the verdict that Vaiko should be sentenced to a year in prison and Rs 10, 000 fine. However, he got bail immediately. As Vaiko was about to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha election, it was said that there is no hurdle for him to contest in the election.
Vaiko has been sentenced with these charges for his speech in 2009. In a book launch event in 2009, he stated that if the war in Sri Lanka is not stopped, then India will not be a unified nation. He voluntarily surrendered for this case, a couple of years back and had been in prison for a month.
