Tamilnadu is a dependent of water sources mainly from two states Kerala and Karnataka. When Kerala plans to shut Mullaperiyar, the main source of the drinking water for Madurai and the neighboring districts, Karnataka decided to build one more dam across Cauvery, which might completely stop the water supply to Tamilnadu. The Karnataka government submitted the Pre-feasibility report (PFR) to the
Narendra Modi
government that cleared it and asked them to submit a detailed project report. Karnataka claims that by building the Mekedatu dam, they could balance the drinking water needs and the reservoir. The Central Water Commission had asked Karnataka to clear all the shortcomings and submit a fresh report, last month and now they had come with a new report and got the approval. If this project is approved and finalized, the reports suggest that Tamilnadu will not get a drop from Cauvery, except the overflow, if the river is flooded, after filling the reservoirs. It is heard that the Tamilnadu government would move to the Supreme Court and the PM, as the order had been passed without consulting with the lower riparian state, Tamilnadu. Farmlands were already destroyed by Gaja and if the water supply is also stopped…. Let us wait for a clear report from the center and TN Government!
