This era saw the rise of Bollywood as an international film industry. Due to a growth in well-to-do NRIs, Hindi movies began to get international attention. 4. 1990s

The 1990s was the era of cheesy but loveable romantic comedies. The main driving force behind the movies of the day was escapism. 5. 2010s

The ongoing decade has seen a sharp rise in the quality of Hindi cinema. Whereas before, Bollywood would be criticised for being "nonsensical" and "ridiculous," the industry has now begun to up the ante in terms of quality, to match up to international standards. 8. 1940s

Films were also used as a tool to spread the message of Independence across the country. Apart from these, the more escapist films used romance and melodrama as the basis of their films

9. 1930s

Indian cinema hit a milestone in 1931, when ArdeshirIrani made the first sound film, Alam Ara. Sound films gained popularity almost overnight, and soon, the entire industry had switched over to it. This made a huge difference, as musicals became extremely popular, a trend that can be observed even today, since no Bollywood movie is complete without at least one song.

Although films were not a commercial enterprise at this point, this decade is still important because it is the beginning of film history in India. 1913 was the year when the first feature film, Raja Harishchandra, was made by filmmaker Dadasaheb Phalke.
