Hema Malini is perhaps the only dream girl of the Bollywood. After Vyjanthimala had left Bollywood, she took steps to reach superstardom on her elegant looks and acting prowess. But she was also an actress who tried to act at the age of 15 in a Tamil film but she was rejected by Tamil Director Sridhar as she was very lean.
But her mother Jaya Chakravarty, who was eager to see Hema get her break in movies, succeeded in casting Hema opposite
in ‘Sapnanon Ka Suadagar’ after director Sridhar’s rejection. Her debut film did not fare well in box office, but she did a negative role in Lal Patthar and portrayed a character of a widow in Andaz in 1971. Hema Malini later on provided the much-needed glamour quotient to every Bollywood film that she acted, and her graceful portrayal of some unforgettable characters on the screen made her the most popular heroine for two decades.
In 1972, she did an impressive dual character in ‘Seeta Aur Geeta; with Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra. In 1973, came the Bollywood’s most evergreen movie ‘Sholay’. In this movie, she immortalized the role of Basanti as a rustic talkative tangewaali, where her dance under the blazing sun on broken glass (Aaa Jab Tak Hai Jaan) or a group Holi dance( Holi Ke Din), remains one of the best dance in Bollywood films. The on-screen chemistry between Hema-Dharmendra had always been much adored and admired.
Both of them together constituted the evergreen and popular romantic pair of Bollywood till date. In 1980, Hema married Dharmendra and continued acting in cinema and also took care to bring up her children Esha and Ahna. Later on, she made her debut as a director in movies and even in TV screen.
