Gunturu Seshendra Sarma, also known as Yuga Kavi, was born on October 20, 1927, in Nagarajupadu, Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. His father’s name was Gunturu Subrahmanyam, and his mother was Ammayama. Gunturu Seshendra has three siblings- Anasuya (who died in 2007), Devasena, and Rajasekharam. He is a well-known Telugu poet, critic, and litterateur in addition to being a trained B.A.B.L. student. He also authored over fifty works, which were later translated into different languages like English, Kannada, Urdu, Bengali, etc. He married Yeddanapudi Janaki in 1909 at the age of 18 years. Vasundhara, Revathi, Vanamaali, and Satyaaki were their offspring.
He was the second Indian nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature for his contributions to the literary world. He also received the “Kalidas Samman” award from Madhya Pradesh Government. In 2004 he was nominated for the Noble Prize in Literature for My Country, My People. He has written various books on topics like Seshajyotsna (a Telugu classical poem), Adhunika Mahabharatam, Shodasi: Secrets of Ramayana, etc. He died on May 30, 2007.
